The first Great Owls Book Night was held on November 22nd and we are delighted to say that it was a resounding success. Over 600 people signed up and those who attended were treated to a fun, stimulating discussion of Ray Dalio’s book Principles: Life & Work with a panel of some of Singapore’s leading VCs, entrepreneurs and innovative thinkers. Speakers included Vishal Harnal (General Partner of 500 Startups), Michael Lints (Partner at Golden Gate Ventures), Mohan Belani (Founder and CEO of e27) and Bernard Leong (Head of Digital at Singapore Post and Founder of AnalyseAsia podcast).
Our speakers shared very different perspectives and opinions of the book, which made for a lively discussion and brought up some interesting ideas. For example, Vishal Harnal talked about how at 500 Startups they practice ‘face-stabbing’ rather than backstabbing in order to open up a radical feedback loop. This was inspired by Dalio’s principle of respectful criticism in the workplace for what he calls ‘radical transparency’.
In terms of achieving goals, Bernard Leong shared that he writes his own principles and recommended everyone do the same to help you get more centred and focused in your life. Mohan Belani suggested defining your goals and the steps you will take to achieve them, and Michael Lints shared how he created small daily habits and followed through with them to achieve his goal of participating in the Hawaiian Ironman World Championship.
There were also some great questions from the audience that helped fuel the conversation. We particularly liked the question by Nazhath Faheema, “How would Dalio’s principles be different if he’d grown up in Asia?” Definitely some interesting food for thought.
All-in-all it was an incredibly inspiring and thought-provoking evening. Many thanks to our speakers for sharing their stories and advice, as well as everyone who participated. Special thanks to our sponsors Rainmaking Innovation, Artisan Boulangerie Co., Peroni Nastro Azzurro and Bottles XO and to our partners Kris Ferrin (MC), photography Kairosnapshots & Katie Baines, videography Graphiss Media and event management NatGrue who made this evening a memorable experience.
We look forward to seeing you at our next event. Be the first to get invited - sign up to Great Owls newsletter!
